Mattapoisett Friends Meeting And Barnstable Friends Meeting (Preparative)
Meeting for Business July 12, 2020
Mattapoisett Friends Meeting joins Barnstable Friends Meeting (Preparative) in minuting our recognition and support of the special gifts of ministry of Rachel Carey-Harper. Rachel’s special gifts of ministry can often be seen most clearly through her use of artistic expression to engage hearts and hands for compassionate and transformative change in matters of social and racial justice. We experience joy at Rachel’s faithfulness to the leadings of the Spirit and promptings of the heart in raising awareness of the breadth of human experience and honoring that of God in everyone.
The Spirit has changed hearts and minds through Rachel’s 30-year ministry of interactive and participatory art projects supporting deep dialogue and community engagement, including her initiation of:
• the Clothesline Project in 1990 (domestic violence awareness),
• the Dragon Panel Project in 2013 (bears witness to violence against people of color),
• the Dragon of Many Colors Project in 2018 (bearing witness to “ordinary” people of color who did extraordinary things); and
• the Tools for Racial Justice website (https://tools4racialjustice.net) in 2019 (interactive resource for exploring and addressing racism).
Mattapoisett Friends Meeting looks forward to the continued workings of the Spirit through Rachel’s ministry. Mattapoisett Friends Meeting and Barnstable Friends Meeting (Preparative) are committed to supporting and nurturing it.
Friends have been appointed by Mattapoisett Friends Meeting to serve on the oversight committee to assist in the provision of spiritual nurturing and practical support for Rachel’s ministry.
