Shake and Say

Use any sort of plastic containers with lids.

Fill some containers 1/2 full, others 2/3rds full, others 3/4ths full, with any kind of dried beans. (Different kinds of containers and beans, as well as different fill levels, make different sounds.) Hand them out to the people in the group. Especially if working with kids, people can have a lot of fun decorating the containers and finding different ways of shaking them.

Do an in-house rally shaking the containers and saying slogans. Find ways to improvise musical tones, like the higher sounds 1st, then the lowest. Take them into an otherwise boring meeting, parade on the street. They are fun to use in a variety of settings.

Start with one person,
ask them to shake a container while ALL say
“Hey, hey, hoe, hoe, racism has got to go”
Have the next shake theirs and ALL say
“Hoe, Hoe, hey, hey, love and kindness is here to stay

Have the next initiate slogan alternating
“Hey, hey, hoe, hoe, __ ___ __ has got to go
“Hoe, hoe, hey hey ____ ____ ____ is here to stay

You can organize the sounds in various creative ways:
lower tones doing the hey, hey, hoe, hoes and the higher ones doing the hoe, hoe, hey, heys, for example.
